FTA Notice of Debt for $12 million renews urgency for Jackson Administration to open Superior Avenue to buses

On Tuesday, December 20th, the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) issued a Notice of Debt to Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (GCRTA), demanding that the agency repay $12 million in outstanding debt due to the Jackson Administration’s decision to close Superior Avenue to buses along Public Square. FTA claimed that the Mayor’s decision to close the road was in violation of their Full Funding Grant Agreement for GCRTA’s Healthline, and demanded repayment of the grant money within 30 days.

In light of the FTA’s Notice of Debt and sustained inaction on behalf of the Jackson Administration, the riders and members of Clevelanders for Public Transit issued the following demands to the City of Cleveland, GCRTA, and the GCRTA Board of Trustees:

1. For the Mayor to act to reopen Superior Avenue on his own accord;

2. In the event the Mayor doesn’t act, that the Board of RTA demand an immediate reopening of the Public Square to buses, and legally enjoin or sue the City of Cleveland for failing to meet their parts of the agreement to maintain an open transit zone.
