Press Release: Clevelanders for Public Transit Hosts Mayoral Candidates Bus Ride-Along and Transit Rider Q & A Tonight!

CLEVELAND, OH, October 12, 2021

Tonight at 5:30 p.m. Clevelanders for Public Transit (CPT) will host a bus ride-along for both Cleveland mayoral candidates ending at Forest City Brewery located at 2135 Columbus Rd, Cleveland, OH 44113.

Both Justin Bibb and Kevin Kelley will take the GCRTA bus from their neighborhood and meet with members from CPT at Forest City Brewery to discuss their ideas and plans to improve public transit. The ride-along will allow both candidates to experience how the average Clevelander uses transit.

“Being disabled makes getting around Cleveland difficult. Sometimes sidewalks aren’t safe for my wheelchair or stops are too far and I’m unable to get to the bus,” says CPT member Shalida Dobbins. “With the high fares, the affordability is not there and sidewalks should be safe for those who use mobility aids. Cleveland has to be accessible, affordable and safe for everyone.”

In the past 15 years, GCRTA fares have doubled while service has been slashed over 25%. CPT recently released a new policy platform, Ending the Transit Death Spiral, that calls for increased funding and ways to make transit better.  Candidates will answer questions based on the policy platform and copies will be provided.

Ending the Death Spiral follows up on CPT’s initial platform, Fair Fares, released in early 2018. Since Fair Fares was published CPT has won significant improvements including fare reductions of nearly $3 million and doubling the amount of people near frequent transit lines by implementing a transit system redesign. Ending the Transit Death Spiral continues to advocate for a transit ambassador program, new local funding sources to expand transit service, equitable transit-oriented development, and systemwide all-door boarding to decrease trip times by up to 20%.

Join CPT tonight to hear more from the candidates about the issues facing the many people that rely on public transportation and how they plan to end the transit death spiral in Cleveland.

Masking and social distancing are required.
